CHILE&ARGENTINA vol.1 / San Pedro de Atacama - Calama - Antofagasta (1998)

- The Border of Bolivia & Chile

It was a very strict border phytosanitary. Birds, insects, and seeds, though, had nothing to do with national borders.

- San Pedro de Atacama to Calama -

I will always be grateful for his whimsy in stopping his car for my awkwardly raised thumb.

- Calama

An old man sells windmills while playing a music box. An afternoon watching it while drinking cheap powder juice.

Hitchhiking on the outskirts of town. Faces, faces, faces sparsely passing by. Listening only to the sound of the strong wind, I realized that four hours had already passed.

- Antofagasta

Remember me when you see the ESSO stand in Japan. He said that when he dropped me off and drove away. Don't worry, I can't ever forget.

It was a peaceful and neat town. This should not be so special, but it has been a while since I have been in a town like this, so I felt as if I were in a specially protected place.

It had been a long time since I had been to a large supermarket. Everything was shiny and bright, the floors, the dishes, the piles of apples.

I wanted to think that material wealth was crap, but in the supermarket I was certainly having fun, and I wanted this and that.

An unexpected reunion with the early summer breeze that separated me six months ago, right on the other side of the earth.

- Antofagasta to La Serena -

Atacama Desert, 12 hours to drive across.
