CHILE & ARGENTINA vol.10 / Glaciar Perito Moreno - El Calafate (1999)

- Puerto Natales

The melting snow water, colder than expected.

- to El Calafate -

A short summer.

A bus on its way home stopped in front of me as a matter of course. A hitchhiker was invited to an empty bus that was going to run anyway. I told the driver where I was going, and the bus started running as a matter of course, so I felt at ease and fell asleep.

A dog herding a flock of sheep. A horse with a gaucho leading it. A prairie society that I had never known at all.

Lake Argentina is the color of the national flag.

- Glaciar Perito Moreno

Suddenly, a great glacier spread out right in front of me. A voice came out as if I had been poked in the back.

I was thinking that I couldn't really get a sense of the size of the glacier because there was nothing to compare it to, until I found a ship that looked like a pea.

A great glacier. It is not on the scale of a large frozen river.

An unbroken tug-of-war between internal and external temperatures. The tension is beautiful, both for the ice and the human body.

This is a landscape that did not exist hundreds of millions of years ago, but in time, this landscape will disappear. I would love to show it to people hundreds of millions of years from now, but it will disappear. But don't worry. There will be another view. There will be another beauty.

- El Calafate

Beef-eating night to satiate because we are in Argentina.

I think even primitive people ate together at first anyway, and that's how they became friends.

It was not a mean of commemoration of our encounter, but we flew a small kite that soared on the principle of a balloon. The strong light that burned out just 30cm above our fingertips remains strangely in the back of my mind's eye.
