ECUADOR vol.4 / Cuenca - Vilcabamba (1998)

[vol.1]  [vol.2]  [vol.3]  [vol.4]

- Cuenca

Someone said happily that this city has old Spanish streetscapes that can no longer be seen in Spain. The pre-colonial scenery is nowhere to be found anymore, though.

They are neither edible nor wearable. People buy such flowers from time to time.

Walking on two legs, "walking and eating" became possible for the first time. It must have felt really great.

I bought a bottle of red sap called "dragon's blood" that day. It is said to be good for abrasions, cuts, and even diarrhea if drunk.

- Vilcabamba

This village is said to be one of the world's longest-lived villages. It is neither hot nor cold, there is no loud noise, the pleasant sound of insects at night, and the air is so clear that I forgot I was breathing.

Spending his days tinkering in the garden.

The villagers' entertainment is cockfighting.

A place where the boundary between sleep and awake becomes unclear.

No need to do anything.

I wanted to throw a pebble without a second thought, so I did. Because there are many places where I can't even do that.

Whenever I visited the rooftop bar, which was almost always empty of customers, there was the warmth of the fire, the lukewarmness of the beer, and the melody from the tape recorder. I learned the name of that song ten years later because I remembered everything that was there.

- Riobamba

A sense of comfort that there is always a mountain in sight.

- Tren Ecuador

The special seat was on the roof of a train. In the chilly early morning air, the departure whistle echoed through the small town.

After leaving the city, the train slowly winds its way through the mountains. It is still too early to speak. I'm blissfully nibbling silently on a chocolate bar in my fleece jumper.

Customers, crew, and peddlers are all on the roof, and the train coach is empty.

Long & Winding.

I never knew tunnels could be so much fun.

A sheep on a bus.

Derailment as expected. Everyone complains, but seems happy.

Every day, on the roof of the train, the boy sells chocolates to travelers who have only one-way ticket.

- Huigra

After spending 7 hours on the roof of the train, we are heading for the city on the back of a truck. The sky has been by my side all day.

Suddenly, an expanse of white horizon appeared among the mountains. For a moment, it was neither clouds nor sea, but just a mass of surprise.

ECUADOR vol.2 / Quito - Mitad del Mundo - Baños (1998)

[vol.1]  [vol.2]  [vol.3]  [vol.4]

- Quito  キト -

I feel like I came back. I also feel like I will be coming back again.

The creaking sound of the wooden floor is a proof that many people have been praying here.

Hola Amigos!

Mitad del Mundo

The equator was a yellow paint line.

I straddled the northern and southern hemispheres and nothing happened, in the fastest moving place on the planet.

Baños

A hot spring town is relaxing, after all. Perhaps it is the steam melting into the city that reminds me of a time long ago, when I was in the warm water before I was born.

A small place of attraction, not enough to be the purpose of a visit. It was gentle on my tired eyes.

- Otavalo

When arriving in a new town, the first thing to do is to go to the market. The steam from the food fills the air, and the light diffuses through the cracks. I slowly draw the outlines of the time I will spend in this town.

Blended with the kena and charango, guitars and violins also play the smell of the earth. It becomes the sound of trees and bark.

A special town where Indigena live as the leading players. When my surprise at racism was wearing off, I was surprised to find a town with no racism.

I asked a bus I came across on my walk where it was going and it said across the lake. I just hopped on, wanting to go over there.

I was lying in the green grass and suddenly remembered the day of the week. I decided to just relax, as I should on a Sunday.

I've been watching pigs all day. It was a nice afternoon.

Young women doing the laundry, children frolicking in the water beside them, old women quietly knitting, and pigs and sheep silently grazing. When did this scene begin and how long will it last? My question, which I have only a linear concept of time, melted into the rippling lake.

Sundays in this village also have an end.

A small hostel that has just opened. The light green of the freshly painted walls, the bright red of the curtains and doors. I remember the sweetness of the hot sugar cane liquor we drank every night, along with those colors.
