- Palmyra  パルミラ -

It is said that this place became the capital because it was a green area. If so, there are some countries where the entire country could be the capital.

ここが緑の多い地域だったから都になったらしい。だったら、まるごと都になれそうな国もある。




The tree of life, date palm.

生命の樹、ナツメヤシ。




There are plants in the desert that are easy to preserve and rich in nutrients. They keep animals alive and live off their feces.

保存しやすく栄養に富む植物が砂漠に在る。動物を生かし、その糞で生きようとしている。




Rice, beans, nuts, chicken and yogurt, a wonder mix of all ingredients in happiness.

米と豆とナッツとチキンとヨーグルト。奇跡のミックスで皆幸福。




It brought back my first excitement. Bicycles are so convenient!

初めての感動が蘇った。自転車って、すごく便利!




There is no reason not to give a ride to those who need.

来るもの乗っけない理由がない。




While waiting for the bus, I wandered around the neighborhood. Someone showed off his car to me, and someone else treated me to tea. An hour, enough time to fall in love with something.

バスを待つ間、近所をぶらぶら。愛車を自慢されたり、お茶をごちそうになったり。一時間、何かを好きになるのに十分な時間。




A little ball, a great emotion maker.

小さなボールは偉大な感情製造機。




I am glad to be here. Thank you.

- Palmyra  パルミラ -

Palmyra ruins. I didn't know how large it was because there was nothing around. I walked around uncontrolled, got tired, and realized how large it was.

パルミラ遺跡。周りに何もないので広さがわからなかった。無節操に歩いて、疲れて、広さを実感。




This is just a small part of it. I got some idea of what prosperity is.

これが、ほんの一部。栄華って感じ、なんとなくわかった。




Looking up, there was beauty.

ふと見上げたら、美しさ。




The columns should have been tall enough to create large shadows.

大きな影を作るための高さだったのかもしれない。




Art does not evolve, it changes. They are all things that are not born past their time.

芸術は、進化ではなく変化する。その時を過ぎれば生まれないものばかり。




A red that was too bright in a landscape faded by the sun.

太陽で色褪せた景色に、鮮やかすぎた赤。




A family on holiday.

休日の家族。




I was treated to a cup of hot tea. I was so delighted, even if it was to get me to buy something.

ごちそうになった熱い紅茶。何かを買わせるためでも全く問題なかった。




They stare at the flowing human history without complaint.

何の文句も言わず、流れる人間の歴史を見つめる。




There must have been a big palace. I missed it. I was born too late.

でっかい宮殿が建っていたのだろう。見逃した。だいぶ遅かった。

- Damascus  ダマスカス -



A walk to soak in this light.

この灯りに浸るための散歩。






People play cards at tables lined up in the alley while puffing water pipes. It's all right if there is no alcohol because anyone can get drunk just by being in the night.

路地に並ぶテーブルで、水煙草をふかしながらトランプに興じる。酒など無くても大丈夫。誰でも夜に酔えるから。




Narrow alleys crisscrossing the old town. I got lost many times and had pleasant encounters each time. This is the perfect town when I want to get lost.

旧市街を縦横無尽に走る細い路地。何度も迷って、その度に楽しい出会いがあった。迷いたい時には最適な街。




The exhalation of plants, pouring down from the green roof.

緑の屋根から降り注ぐ、植物の呼気。




The water fountain, a common sight throughout this city, is a place to feel God in this arid land.

街中でよく見かける水飲み場。この乾燥の地では、神を感じる場所。




A fashionable street.

お洒落着どおり。




I can always find them before I get hungry.

小腹が減る前に必ず出会える。




Lamb and coriander, a miraculous flavor created by the meeting of two strong characteristics.

羊肉とコリアンダー。強い個性同士の出会いが生む奇跡の風味。




Shawarma goes great with fresh fruit juices, served in large mugs and straws.

生フルーツジュースはシュワルマと相性抜群。大きなジョッキとストローでごくごく。




In the front is a Christian church and in the back is an Islamic mosque. They are neighbors and have been always doing well together.

手前はキリスト教会、奥はイスラムモスク。お隣同士で、ずっとうまくやってきた。




Comparing the eggplants with both hands, and choosing the right shape for tonight's dish. A common afternoon, a common scene.

両手で茄子を見比べ、今夜の料理に合う形を選ぶ。当たり前の午後、当たり前の景色。

魅惑のスーク。




Do the merchants know what exists everywhere and what only exists here?

どこにでもある物と、ここにしかない物。その区別を、商人たちは知るのだろうか。




The most commonplace tools evolve most beautifully.

最も当たり前の道具が、最も美しく進化する。




It is the common practice in this city to have several perfumes mixed together to your liking. You may forget what kind of clothes the person was wearing, but you will never forget his or her scent.

幾つもの香水を好みで混ぜてもらうのがこの街の主流。どんな服を着ていたか忘れても、その人の匂いは忘れないから。




A thin roof covering the souk. The countless holes made by time create constellations.

スークを覆う薄い屋根。時が生み出した無数の穴が星座をつくる。




There is no such thing as a floor plan, so you can go every day and still find something new.

フロアガイドなんかないから、毎日行っても足りない。






- Umayyad Mosque  ウマイヤド・モスク -

A sanctuary in the middle of the bustling souk. All the voices of people relaxing comfortably melt into the heavens.

喧騒のスークの真ん中に聖地。くつろぐ人の全ての声が心地よく天に溶ける。




Once I sit down on the marble floor, warmed to human skin, the boundary between this building and myself disappears.

人肌に温まった大理石の床に座り込めば、この建物と自分との境は消える。




We are all connected by the soles of our feet. She is lifted up by the hands of all the people in this place.

足の裏でみんな繋がっている。この場所にいる全ての人の手で、この子は持ち上がっている。

- Bosra  ボスラ -

Olives, cheese, yogurt and apricot jam, breakfast can be infinitely more delicious with one's own arrangements.

オリーブ、チーズ、ヨーグルトに杏ジャム。付け合わせで無限に美味しくなるのが朝食の条件。




Why do you smoke only halfway? Indeed, only my cigarette butts were long in the ashtray. I always thought I smoked enough.

どうして途中までしか吸わないのか? 確かに、灰皿の中で、僕の吸い殻だけ長かった。十分吸ってるつもりだったんだけどなぁ。




Living ruins, where the boundary between ruins and dwelling places is blurred.

遺跡と住処の境が曖昧な、生き遺跡。




A passageway leading to the auditorium of a huge Roman theater. What remains are stones that have absorbed the exhalations of the people who filled here.

巨大ローマ劇場の客席へと通じる通路。残っているのは充満した呼気を吸い込んだ石。




From here to the stage.

ここから舞台へ。




A construction that should remain.

残るべき建物。




Even my little soliloquy seems to reach the farthest audience seats.

小さな独り言ですら一番遠くの客席まで届きそう。




There are several large stones of different colors, which are broken into pieces and gathered together to form a mosaic. Everything will break and become one again.

違う色した大きな石が幾つもあって、それらがバラバラに砕かれ、集められ、生まれるモザイク。みんな壊れて、またひとつになる。




Every tangle is a line.

どんな絡まりも、一本の線。




God and water, the first things we need.
