BOLIVIA vol.5 / Laguna Colorada - Laguna Verde (1998)

- to Laguna Colorada -

Day 2 of the Land Cruiser trip, yesterday and today we are on different planets.

A large flock of flamingos on a lake at an altitude of 3,500 meters. I wasn't even sure if I was surprised because there was already too much of everything.

Lunch for the living. The reason it tastes so good is because life is rare here.

This rock will fall someday as it is scraped by the wind. I would like to be there when it happens, but it seems impossible with this body.

- Laguna Colorada -

Tonight's lodging was on the shores of a red lake. I felt like I was no longer on the earth.

- to Laguna Verde -

Running on freshly awakened planet.

Steam from pores.

Every time this planet looks like a living thing, I feel a little relieved. Even if there are no eyes or mouths, even if its growth and death are ambiguous, if everything is alive, I feel a little less afraid.

Natural Steam Bath.

A luxurious morning bath.

- Laguna Verde -

I was plenty surprised, thank you.

BOLIVIA vol.4 / Uyuni - San Juan (1998)

 [vol.1]  [vol.2]  [vol.3]  [vol.4]  [vol.5]

- Uyuni

Another new expression of this planet.

The Land Cruiser continues to drive at breakneck speed. The white expands to 360 degrees all the way to the point of anxiety.

It is natural that there is an island because it is a lake. An island of cactus suddenly appeared in a white, dry world.

Everything is hazy in the strong reflected light. Blue, brown, and green are all illusions for a moment.

Salt water springs up from the cracks of the salt lake. My hands, immersed in the cold salt water, instantly dried up and turned completely white.

It's simply fun.

- San Juan -

Someone is living here, and that fact alone is reassuring.

I believed that our playground would never disappear. That's why I could say bye-bye every day. I don't remember the last day I played with all those faces.

Climbing the hill with a bottle of red wine, knowing it would go well with the setting sun.

BOLIVIA vol.3 / Potosi (1998)

- Potosi

At an altitude of about 4,000 meters, this brown town silently emerges like a chameleon.

Deep blue on the ceiling of this city with no sea or lake. Perhaps people need this color.

To the depths of the mine, with dynamite and coca leaves as gifts.

Here, it takes about 2 hours with chisels and hammers to dig out the 80 cm that can be dug out in 5 minutes with a digging machine. Because the labor cost is lower than the cost of the machine and its fuel.

Filling the mouth full of coca leaves to cheat away hunger and exhaustion.

A clay figure enshrined deep in the mine. This is a different world from the above ground, so an underground god who loves the underground is needed.

From morning till night they swing their chisels in the darkness where they can't take a step without a light, in the heart of the city closest to the sky in the world.

I thought that metal, which is only obtainable in the dark, could not possibly be inherently necessary for human beings. But my body, exposed to the sun, was covered in various metals. When I put a cigarette in my mouth, even the tip of the lighter had metal on it.

There are those who laugh.

I can eat anything, funny enough.

Surely, there are many small miscalculations engraved in it. The human rhythm that produces miscalculations is the secret of beauty.

I overslept, missed the bus, and because of that, I bumped into my friend again. It's totally magical.

BOLIVIA vol.2 / Tiwanaku (1998)

 [vol.1]  [vol.2]  [vol.3]  [vol.4]  [vol.5]

- Tiwanaku

Too much space and not enough things, this is a too ruinous ruin.

Gate of the Sun. A single big stone makes me imagine all the buildings and people that have left.

It is a human habit to look for meaning in all patterns.

A gentle wall that protects us from the wind and holds the solar heat. But it did not save me from sudden rain.

The wind was blowing very strong, and the huge stone, which did not seem to be affected by the wind at all, looked lonely.

Since when? For how long? Not sure.

BOLIVIA vol.1 / La Paz (1998)

 [vol.1]  [vol.2]  [vol.3]  [vol.4]  [vol.5]

The bus drives along the shores of Lake Titicaca. The sky and the lake reflect each other so closely.

The clouds, really, were almost within reach.

A whole bus on a small ferry. Another surprise and laughter.

Snapping.

- La Paz

Suddenly an unusual view in a small car window. Immediately, I asked the bus to stop and slowly digested the view I had never imagined.

In a mortar-shaped city, there are not slopes everywhere, but only slopes.

It is natural to be out of breath quickly, because the air is so diluted and we are climbing up slopes without even realizing it.

The air becomes increasingly diluted, sharp, and transparent as people crowd together at an altitude of 3,600 meters.

- Valle de la Luna -

Next to the big city, the whimsical crafting of the earth.

On the bus ride, the lady next to me was smiling, looking at a brand new Christmas card before she wrote on it.

Beyond the smoke of roasting meat, there is a pile of metalware and stuffed toys. Cigarette butts tossed into the air are stepped on by someone as if by an automatic system. A bundle of balloons held by a peddler and a random light bulbs overlapping it. I am rolling down a carelessly illuminated street.
