- Caribbean Sea & San Blas Islands
To the left of the stern is a dropping toilet and to the right is the kitchen. All dishes are made with seawater pumped in here...
The boat makes stops at islands off the coast of Panama and heads for Colombia, piling up coconuts as it goes. Each time, our sleeping space gets smaller and smaller.
Playmates with whom my lack of vocabulary does not matter so much.
On the sea, the coconut contents are valuable resource for survival. Drink the water inside, nibble on the nuts, and throw the shells into the sea, without being found by the crew.
One of the joys of living on a boat is developing recipes with coconut. Today's experiment was an espresso with coconut water. Its blissful aroma went unanimously into the Hall of Fame.
The Kuna people of the islands off the coast of Panama wear bright cheek rouge, elaborate costumes, nose rings and bracelets. I selfishly hope that this tradition will last long.
The Kuna are thin and small. Due to the ornaments that constrict their bodies, the women have especially thin limbs. Peaceful creatures living in a society where they don't have to beat anyone, they may not need to grow big. In fact, it might be more energy efficient to be small.
The residence, made of banana trees, provides good protection from rain and offers a moderate breeze. There are the bare necessities inside, and of course, no locks. It is more like a nest than a residence, and that is good enough.
Is it happy or unhappy to be able to find where you are on the globe, or to know that the earth is the third planet of the solar system?
Every time a cargo boat arrives on the island, it docks for a few hours. We just waited leisurely for the boat to depart. It was a life on board that made us realize how fortunate we were to be in the shade.
The Italian street performers who shared the boat trip made all the children in the small Island happy.
Living on the boat without a bath, I sometimes jumped into the sea to sweat it out, and on the fourth day the crew finally told me, "Don't go in the sea too much, because there are sharks".
Suddenly a storm hit, and the little boat rocked like a roller coaster, and a torrential downpour drenched us. I woke up to the common sense that not all sailing days are pleasant, and that the sea can be very wild.
When I woke up at midnight, the boat was on a hemisphere surrounded by stars 360 degrees. Moonless night, starlight on the surface of the sea, I was glad to be on this boat. Early in the morning on the seventh day after leaving port, the South American continent came into view.
